1. The contracting parties consider all issues that may arise in the course of their agricultural trade in accordance with this agreement and seek appropriate solutions. Issues affecting the functioning of the free trade area between Canada and EFTA states may also be discussed in the Joint Committee established by Article 26 of the Free Trade Agreement or in a relevant subcommittee or working group established by Article 9 of the Free Trade Agreement or by the Joint Committee. The agreement contains provisions on trade facilitation, under which contracting parties simplify trade procedures for related products and services, promote multilateral cooperation among themselves, and cooperate within the joint committee to facilitate trade. In 2009, a free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association, which counts Switzerland among the four members, came into force. In 2018, Canada and Switzerland signed a joint declaration to promote deepening bilateral cooperation in the fields of science, technology and innovation. In 1999, Canada opened free trade negotiations with EFTA. Negotiations were successfully concluded in June 2007 and the Canada-EFTA free trade agreement was signed on January 26, 2008. The CTATA has been accompanied by bilateral agricultural agreements between Canada and each EFTA state. Both came into force on July 1, 2009. The agreement removes almost all tariffs, excluding certain agricultural and fishing products from the immediate abolition of tariffs.
